While we have attempted goal planning in the past, after completing our 2021 Year in Review and realizing that we didn’t review our progress on a regular basis (or remember what some of our goals even were), we were determined that this year would be different.

The main resource we used for our Goal Planning Session was the Designed on Purpose goal planning workbook from Janine Deanna.  We selected the key areas we want to focus on and then created an agenda for our meeting.  Our goal planning took us around two hours, but we continue to review and update our goals every week.  Here are the highlights from our goal planning session:

Authentically You

We started by reviewing the foundations of our business:

  • Mission: our mission is “To make wine people love while sharing our journey to owning our own winery”

  • Vision: our vision is “To build a winery that allows us to connect with people and inspire them to chase their dreams”

  • Values: our company values are family, gratitude, hard work, accountability and humor

  • Unique connection factor: we are bringing people along on our journey to owning our own winery and are sharing the behind the scenes of our business

  • Word of the year: our word for this year is Consistency

We decided to frame and put up some of these foundational items to remind us of what is important for us this coming year.

Define & Align

We then identified what we thought a successful year would be and reviewed the health of our company:

  • Envision your success: we talked about what success looked like and our goals in four key areas:

  1. Sales targets by vintage

  2. New store and restaurant targets by city

  3. Consistent planning and review of progress on our goals and our financials/inventory

  4. Detailed transition plan for our move to BC

  • Current health of your organization: we talked about two main areas we wanted to improve/put in place for things to run more smoothly:

  1. Weekly, monthly and quarterly planning and review

  2. Time blocking for social media content

Design Your Strategy

We identified four key strategic marketing areas we wanted to focus on in 2022:

  1. Influencer program

  2. Media/PR

  3. Email marketing

  4. Direct sales

For each of these four areas we answered the following questions:

  • What does each strategy include?

  • What are the objectives of each strategy?

  • Where do our goals fit into each strategy?

  • What actions can we take this year to accomplish our goals and which quarter does the action belong in?

Then we looked at the first quarter and identified:

  • What month does the action belong in? (yellow sticky notes)

  • What are the specific tasks related to that action? (pink sticky notes)

  • What are the metrics or success factors for the actions? (blue sticky notes)

It was a lot of work but in the end, we have a clear direction on the actions we need to take.

We also identified one additional area we wanted to focus on in 2022 which was Operations. This will include financial and inventory tracking, regular operations (e.g. bottling wine) and our transition plan.

Next Steps

We now meet weekly to look at our goals and actions for the current month to determine what we should focus on in the coming week. The changes we have made towards our approach on goal planning has made a world of difference in the progress we have already made so far this year.

And that wraps up the summary of our 2022 goal planning! If you have a business, have you identified your goals for the year? Let us know below!
